WEEK 4

WEEK 4

Last week could probably only be summed up as a mess. Three people died, one was turned to currency and the hotel pool remains in a general state of unusability unless swimming in pulpy mush is someone’s idea of a good time. And that’s not even counting the haunted morse code T-Rex. At least the greenhouse is as relaxing as ever, even if someone seems to have made off with a number of succulents and cacti.

But with the new week comes a new set of locations to explore as the fog retreats to reveal another portion of the city. The half moon wanes to a new moon this week, leaving streets even dimmer this week -- hopefully you have some other portable sources of light available if you plan on straying too far beyond the reach of the lampposts in the new areas.

[[Welcome to Week 4! Note that new areas have been added, and can be found under the Week 4 tab on our Locations page. Once again, feel free to make top levels at your discretion, and remember to note it in your header if you plan on investigating any locations. You can also privately contact The Lady or Rembrandt.]]

[...so, you know, he kind of wants to look at fish, even if that means walking through the museum, but... hm. There is Iago, and he's doing a thing!

...

Maybe he shouldn't be nosy, he doesn't like people being nosy about him.

...

but he's gonna be nosy.]

Good... evening, I suppose. I see you are working on something, then?
psychophant: (✦ 98)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
[considering how nosy he's been about you, he definitely deserves this.]

I am, yes.

[...there are so many colored pens here... Iago at least has the decency to stop what he's working on and look up when Seteth addresses him.]

It's nothing particularly important. Is there something you need?
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not particularly, no. I was simply curious.

[...]

...they really do have so many different colors of ink here, don't they...
psychophant: (✦ 13)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
[thank you, you understand his fascination with the ink!!]

They do. I've been fascinated with them since I first saw them. Pens are interesting enough on their own, but being able to write in color certainly makes taking notes more interesting.

[this isn't even being a nerd, this is being a child]
baitless: an expression that can serve as either deep frustration or, perhaps, some level of grief. who can say. (i am so tired all of the time.)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can imagine being able to color code things being very useful, as well. Of course, I'd imagine there would be artistic implications as well, but I'm completely useless at that...

[look, we are all like children seeing these wonders of modernity for the first time, it's fine]
psychophant: (✦ 89)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not doing much better there, but that is what I've been working on.

[Well, sort of. Iago gestures to the bench, come sit and look at his not-so-great art!!]
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. Well, if you don't mind me taking a look...

[Seteth will go ahead and look at Iago's little art project, then!]

[It looks like he hasn't actually been doing anything too productive, but you're likely to recognize what he's been doodling as magic circles; designs that aren't quite the same between worlds but are close enough to be easily recognizable. There are a few designs that are more geometric and obviously not for magic, as well. But it's mostly anything you'd expect of a mage, though it ranges from obviously dark magic in design to things that could possibly be reason magic, if one weren't entirely familiar with what reason magic tomes look like.]

I don't mind it. It's not as though any of them are particularly useful here anyway.

[The detail on the magic designs is pretty damn intricate, but obviously even a perfect one wouldn't work without the rest of the tome, so...]
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see.

[...look, not every dark mage is a horrible person, even if one very specific person is, but then he's been dealing with a lot of horrible weirdos so like.

you know.]

Well, it is good to keep in practice, is it not, in the event that you find a proper medium for the spells? I have been trying to do that myself.
psychophant: (✦ 32)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely. Theoretically I could put together a proper tome, but I would have to recreate every page and my memory isn't that incredible.

You're keeping your skills sharp with your weapons training, correct?
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I can imagine. I've never had the head for that kind of thing, even if I understand the basics well enough to use magic if necessary.

[Macuil was always the magic nerd...]

Yes, I have, though I've only been able to work with lances for now. I'm hoping I can get an axe and a sword sooner or later for that end of things...

I am a bit surprised that we haven't come across some sort of store with weapons, even if they're weapons we're unfamiliar with. [like guns!!] It seems strange that a city like this wouldn't offer a means to defend oneself.
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know we can get weapons from the shop, but it’s very strange that there are no other stores that seem to sell weapons. You would at least expect to see whatever this world’s equivalent to a blacksmith is.

[maybe if antumbra took place in the rural US they’d be having a very different conversation...]
psychophant: (✦ 52)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[murdergame in the south when]

That's precisely what's confusing me. It seems as though there isn't as large an emphasis on weapons as there is in Nohr, but that's based entirely on what books I've read about this city. It's possible that with the increased technology they've found some way to create some other sort of weapons, but even then I'd expect to find somewhere that sells those.

[????????? this is so confusing. where are y'all hiding your blacksmiths.]

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[cartesio was kind of that, but it wasn’t southern gothic]

You are definitely right. Perhaps we simply have not found what weapons they do use yet? That, or everyone is trained in hand to hand combat as a matter of course...
psychophant: (✦ 92)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[things i never realized i wanted until just now: this]

I suppose that's possible, but it would make more sense that there are weapons available as well. We'll have to keep an eye out.
baitless: another neutral serious expression, but it's a cg model! (explain this "mine craft" to me.)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn’t be surprised if our captors confiscated them all, but on the other hand, you would think that leaving weapons around would do a better job of encouraging us to kill each other...
psychophant: (✦ 03)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I don't get. It seems some people have received weapons, but wouldn't it make more sense to leave plenty of them around so everyone would have a means of killing outside of whatever power they have?
baitless: he looks a bit tired, but less intensely so. (how vaguely and unhelpfully can i put it)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be that they are attempting to encourage us to use our powers to do the deed as a means of observing the results of their experiments. That seems like the sort of thing they would do.
psychophant: (✦ 52)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-28 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That certainly is true, and it does seem as though there's a mostly even distribution of those powers. I doubt either of them will confirm that, but that's an excellent theory.
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-29 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt they would confirm it either, but then again, people seem like they have been getting things resembling answers out of them. I have no idea how much they can be trusted, granted, but it's not impossible, I suppose.
psychophant: (✦ 92)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-29 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, agreed. There's no telling how much of what they say is the truth, but learning what we can from them is the best option we have at present.

[Well, aside from INVESTIGATING, but most of that is stuff we still don't know what to do with, so.]
baitless: he looks a bit tired, but less intensely so. (how vaguely and unhelpfully can i put it)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-30 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish the things we were discovering by exploring the city fit together more cleanly. I do not know what to make of most of them, or how relevant anything we learn even is.
psychophant: (✦ 20)

[personal profile] psychophant 2020-01-30 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. It feels as though we aren't making much progress right now, but there's little else we can do. With any luck, we'll begin to see how all of these pieces fit together in time.

[But that doesn't stop it from being frustrating as hell right now.]
baitless: bringing a hand up to his face thoughtfully. (chai... just means tea...)

[personal profile] baitless 2020-01-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe so as well. Perhaps once we have access to all the pieces, we'll see how they fit together, but it feels like there is much missing.

...

[He lowers his voice as another thought strikes him.]

There are also, well, the dead, if they manage to contact us again.
