THIRD TRIAL

Trial III

From what you can see, all the lights in the opera house are turned on. Only when you enter and see the open doors that lead into the main theater, you can see that room's lights are currently turned off. It's very dark in there.

Like before, Rembrandt escorts everybody to the stage. In the dark you still can see the many blue-eyed things you may be getting used to. They're still very scared of Rembrandt, staying as far away from the assistant as possible. The stage is illuminated by the spotlights, the only light in this theater.

The Lady and Rembrandt are at their balcony. She stands up, addressing the group:

"After the fiasco somebody I won't name caused yesterday, I'm glad to see someone else had the courage to do what was needed. This time it's a valid murder. To the culprit: I wish you good luck, darling. Let's see you get away with this murder."

Someone seems to be pleased, unfortunately. Anything that makes the Lady pleased can't be good, can it?

Let the trial for the death of Olivert Reise Arnor and Sirius begin.

I can think of three possibilities. [ Just ticking off a finger with each thing. ] They were carrying the paint already on them, they wanted to implicate someone who uses paint, or they needed it for the crime.

...Illusio is the only reason I can think of that such a thing would be required.

You did say you found belongings on a piano, did you not?

The colors of the paint seem unusual.

[Well, painting during a murder also seems unusual but eh.]

Now that you mention it, I did think the colors were a strange choice. Ivory and black... and there's a piano involved.

I can't see why someone would try painting a piano but, well, here we are. [ Left with a strange murder with strange paint and a strange box prison in a freezer. ]

We don't know everyone's powers, either.

It seems a bit...unnecessary to mix paints for Illusio, wouldn't you think?

Was there anything else interesting about the paint puddle?

...No, not really. The only thing to really note besides what I mentioned initially is that the ivory seemed to be there for the accents, and I saw more of it under the black because I dug into the pile to see if there was anything hidden, but nothing else.

Since you went digging around in it, what else can you tell me about how it felt? Did it actually feel like paint?

Actually...it did feel like paint. Lumpy paint.

Hm. I do suppose paint would have a similar consistency...

I feel confident in presenting a new possibility: the presence of a Klados replica.

...And I don't think the idea's wrong at all.

We know that Sirius was a rather tall person, but he had injuries on both his back and front. Plus, no one would have been able to bring him easily by their lonesome into the freezer.

So it fits.

Ah, but my suspicion a bit more direct than that.

How does paint relate to our power?

I did not consider calling it paint when I experimented with one of my replicas, but I do see how it could be seen as such.

Have you not tested your replica's limits, Mikami?

No. I've summoned it exactly twice. Once for the sake of proving my power in trial and then last night when I was guarding Zangetsu.

I see. Then you wouldn't know that if injured, a replica melts on the spot.

Honestly, I've wondered just how many of my fellow Klados users might be taken by surprise in regard to this little caveat.
