Your hosts have come and gone, and have left you with nothing but more questions and a key. Regardless of how you reacted or what you decided to do soon after that, it’s a fact that the day must end eventually.

And so it does, with the striking of the clock. As the twelve gongs reverberate and disappear into the night, the rest of the city is left silent save for a chilly wind that skims the streets. Those who have retired to their assigned rooms will find that the furnishings are decent enough to get a good night’s sleep, while those who wander the city will only continue to see empty streets and fog. But regardless of how you spend the night, eventually it will become readily apparent that dawn will not be coming any time soon as the waxing moon continues to hang in the sky even as the clock strikes six or seven or eight.

No one’s stopping you from wallowing in bed or holing up in a building during this perpetual night, but there’s a whole city out there to check out and some interesting additions to the Opera House decor; don’t forget though, a cage is a cage and every good cage needs its bars. While a portion of the streets and buildings are clear, any intrepid explorers won’t find themselves able to get very far through the fog that surrounds them; anyone who tries to venture through will end up getting turned around and end up right back where they started. Still, there’s plenty of other places to check, even if the fog-shrouded buildings are more or less off limits. Fortune favors the bold, after all.

[ Rean didn't judge Iago's lack of kitchen skills. He's definitely encountered some nobles, and even some who weren't, that didn't have cooking skills (hi Millium)

He'll wear his savior of the day/kitchen mantle proudly. ]

I have more than enough to go around and I understand completely. If you want, I could even teach you how to cook some things.

[On the one hand, he doesn't like admitting he doesn't know something and this is mildly embarrassing.

...On the other, he's more likely to actually burn down the kitchen if he actually has to prepare food for himself, so a little embarrassment is probably worth it.]

[The words are way more stilted than anything he usually says, but look. He's trying...]

[ Once again, the kitchen has been rescued by possibly a terrible death. ]

Since I'm making eggs and pancakes, we can actually just start there.

[ He'll lead him through the simple process of cooking one or two eggs, along with using whatever materials they have here to make it happen. At the very least he could do this while making some pancakes for the other at the same time.

At the end of the explanation where he's placing some pancakes on a plate for the other, he'll ask: ]

[For as awkward as Iago was about asking for help with this, he's actually very attentive to the process. It's obvious he doesn't really understand the stove, but once he gets the general idea of what to do, he adapts to it easily. The rest of it is easier to understand, and any questions he has are usually fairly simple ones.

By the time Rean's done, Iago no longer looks nearly as awkward about the whole thing.]

Yes, your explanations are certainly appreciated. It doesn't seem nearly as complicated as I was expecting.

[ There's a little teasing edge to his voice, but that's all. He has no intentions of saying a breath of this to anyone.

I've been a little curious since our talk last time, but...what's Kimg Garon like? We've got our own royalty in Erebonia and it's always interesting hearing about others.

[Alright, time to dig in— oh. That's actually a pretty good question, and Iago rests an elbow on the table and then his chin on his hand as he considers how to answer it.]

King Garon is... a bit difficult to work with at times. [That's understating it a lot.] He's very particular in how he wants things to be done. He is an excellent ruler, however; the people of Nohr have been loyal to him for a very long time.

[...mostly because he rules with an iron fist and they don't have a choice or they'll be executed, but details!!]

I've always found working for King Garon to be immensely rewarding regardless of any difficulties.

Well, I'm glad that you have the chance to work under such a good King. I'm sure he's also lucky to have such a reliable person by his side.

[ Granted, Rean's saying this only because he was blissfully unaware to Garon's tyrannical rule, but hey. Sometimes ignorance was bliss. ]

He is. I've been managing things for him for... quite a long time, now. His health has taken a turn for the worse lately, so he's relying almost exclusively on me.

[Not "almost", he literally won't let anyone else in to see him.]

That's exactly what I'm thinking. It works in their favor, and if they have the power to drag us here at will anyway, I'd assume they waited until the perfect moment to drag us here so we'd be more agreeable to kill.

[Of course, it's possible that it really is just a coincidence, but that seems unlikely.]

Yeah. I was in the middle of something important myself, so that definitely doesn't help their case either.

My friends, students, and I were in the middle of trying to put a stop to another one of Ouroboros' schemes since it involved a lot of innocent people getting hurt, putting it simply.

Who - or what - is Ouroboros?

[ He will always do his best...and it was only fair, since Iago opened up. ]

It's a secret society, that has some kind of hidden agenda. They've basically intervened in the history of other countries to their benefit, and always are up to no good, whether that means helping with start a war or otherwise.

Interesting... Do you know why they were involved?

To help finish off with their "Phantasmal Blaze Plan".
