WEEK 1

WEEK 1

Your hosts have come and gone, and have left you with nothing but more questions and a key. Regardless of how you reacted or what you decided to do soon after that, it’s a fact that the day must end eventually.

And so it does, with the striking of the clock. As the twelve gongs reverberate and disappear into the night, the rest of the city is left silent save for a chilly wind that skims the streets. Those who have retired to their assigned rooms will find that the furnishings are decent enough to get a good night’s sleep, while those who wander the city will only continue to see empty streets and fog. But regardless of how you spend the night, eventually it will become readily apparent that dawn will not be coming any time soon as the waxing moon continues to hang in the sky even as the clock strikes six or seven or eight.

No one’s stopping you from wallowing in bed or holing up in a building during this perpetual night, but there’s a whole city out there to check out and some interesting additions to the Opera House decor; don’t forget though, a cage is a cage and every good cage needs its bars. While a portion of the streets and buildings are clear, any intrepid explorers won’t find themselves able to get very far through the fog that surrounds them; anyone who tries to venture through will end up getting turned around and end up right back where they started. Still, there’s plenty of other places to check, even if the fog-shrouded buildings are more or less off limits. Fortune favors the bold, after all.

[[Welcome to Week 1! Feel free to make top levels at your discretion, and remember to note it in your header if you plan on investigating any locations. You can also now privately contact The Lady or Rembrandt at your leisure!]]

I did know him at the time, and as far as I can tell he is exactly the same. Admittedly four years does make the memories a bit dull, but I can't recall any differences between the Dazai-kun here and the Dazai-kun I remember.

Then we might be looking at parallel universes with only minuscule differences between them. If the Dazai here and the one from your home were one and the same in every regard, it would imply the outcome of all of this is already decided and Dazai is sure to return home without updating or changing his behaviour in any way as a result of his experiences.

That seems... unlikely, though we cannot disprove it without his death.

Since we're already on a parallel Earth, it appears far more plausible that the two of you are from closely adjacent worlds.

Or, as you said, the outcome is already predetermined and he survives all of this.

[He likes that scenario actually. He wants Dazai to survive.]

While I have reason to doubt this situation has much in common with what I've dealt with, I will say as someone who specializes in "parallel universes with minor differences" that the timelines of fractured dimensions don't have to be in sync with that of the prime dimension. It's perfectly possible that each of you is from a different offshoot timeline, in which case whatever happens to him in one has no bearing whatsoever on how he turns out in another.

[ He doesn't want Dazai to survive, but also these are facts. ]

That is what I hypothesized, thank you.

[ +1 to does not want Dazai to survive.

But also hm. This makes 'destroying worlds' pretty literal for Rideaux. Mikami is going to... quietly side-eye this. ]
pr159: (i made up my mind to exploit it)

Don't mention it.

[ problem? ]

[Wow why do y'all want Dazai dead- okay no he totally understands why people find him aggravating. Keeping Dazai alive is going to be a chore.]

So you're saying that I don't have to conceal facts about his future to make sure those things actually happen, because it's another timeline and wouldn't affect the past of mine?
pr159: (i left that part out)

[personal profile] pr159 2020-01-09 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say that for sure without knowing either of your worlds, but it seems fairly likely. Even if you were on the same timeline before, his appearance here could be a point of divergence that branched off into a new alternate universe.

[ Not a divergence catalyst, of course, but something along similar lines, if such a thing exists in other worlds. ]

Either way, I don't see much point in holding anything back from him, unless you just don't want to tell him.

I was only holding back out of concern over affecting my present if it was his future. But since that isn't an issue, I'm sure he will be happy to know that he still has terrible taste in food and jokes, even as a productive, working adult.
