Your hosts have come and gone, and have left you with nothing but more questions and a key. Regardless of how you reacted or what you decided to do soon after that, it’s a fact that the day must end eventually.

And so it does, with the striking of the clock. As the twelve gongs reverberate and disappear into the night, the rest of the city is left silent save for a chilly wind that skims the streets. Those who have retired to their assigned rooms will find that the furnishings are decent enough to get a good night’s sleep, while those who wander the city will only continue to see empty streets and fog. But regardless of how you spend the night, eventually it will become readily apparent that dawn will not be coming any time soon as the waxing moon continues to hang in the sky even as the clock strikes six or seven or eight.

No one’s stopping you from wallowing in bed or holing up in a building during this perpetual night, but there’s a whole city out there to check out and some interesting additions to the Opera House decor; don’t forget though, a cage is a cage and every good cage needs its bars. While a portion of the streets and buildings are clear, any intrepid explorers won’t find themselves able to get very far through the fog that surrounds them; anyone who tries to venture through will end up getting turned around and end up right back where they started. Still, there’s plenty of other places to check, even if the fog-shrouded buildings are more or less off limits. Fortune favors the bold, after all.

That'd be too easy. Might have better luck in one of the other locked buildings, once those open up.

[ she growls and her fingers rub at her temple. ]

I assume we'll have to earn that somehow.

[ ... but from the way he says it, he has a damn good guess as to how. ]

[raventhaw]

Of course we will. And you know exactly how we're going to do it.

[ she shrugs. ]

But who knows? Maybe someone else will do the work for us.

[galrarm]

[ The disapproval is practically radiating from him. ]

I'm not sure how that's much better.

[raventhaw]

Because you won't have to get your hands dirty.

[ she gives no fucks about your disapproval ]

[galrarm]

[ Jesus, Raven. ]

Maybe that's how you see it, but that's not exactly my biggest concern here.

[raventhaw]

And that doesn't surprise me at all.

[ she turns back towards the bookshelf, pulling out a few more that have interesting titles. ]

Always worrying about other people...when the only person you need to worry about is yourself.

[galrarm]

[ Which, in turn, doesn't surprise him.

also shiro has never worried about himself a day in his life ]

I'm capable of doing both, believe it or not.

Congratulations. Would you like a medal?

[ raven.... ]

I'm not going to repeat myself. You know what I said and I'm sticking to it. Extending a hand towards any of us here will only get you into trouble later.

[galrarm]

[ Raven. ]

And I'm sticking to what I said, too. Seems like we're at an impasse.

[raventhaw]

Of course we are.

[ stubborn. both of them. ]

I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

[galrarm]

[ What he wants to say is that people can change.... but. ]

Maybe not.

[ That's what he settles for, after a while. ]

[raventhaw]

[ wishful thinking, shiro. ]

I will admit, though, I did ask you to aid me just now, didn't I. And you were able to confirm some things for me. For that, I will say thank you.

[ she actually...sounds pretty sincere about it, too? wow. ]

[galrarm]

[ Wow indeed. Shiro nods. ]

You're welcome. If I can put something to use here, then I'm glad to do it.

[ There sure is an undercurrent of self-deprecation there, huh. ]

investigation: bookstore

[raventhaw]

[ there sure is. it makes raven squint at him a little, but she decides to take her stack of books and takes a few steps past him, to the next aisle. she seems pretty adamant about scanning each one for anything important.

is there a non-fiction section for science? if so, what sorts of books will she find? ]

[There indeed is some! Although they don't seem to be specialized, they're for the general public.

Are you looking for anything specific?]

[raventhaw]

[ let's look for books that talk about the latest technological advancements. right now she's trying to see how far back in the past (or the future) this version of earth is compared to remnant. ]

[In here there's a book about inventions, that seems to be for elementary school kids level. There's plenty of colorful pictures, talking about the wonders of science and the importance of electronics! Clearly an attempt to get kids to join this line of work.

Handheld devices like rectangular flip phones, digital cameras, something that seems to be promoting 'a new style of TV: plasma TVs!' feature in the last few pages]

[ these plasma TVs look outdated compared to the tech on remnant. so do these weird-looking phones and these digital cameras; remnant has scrolls that have all these features in one device.

if shiro's still around, he'll hear raven scoff as she turns the pages of this children's book.

is there anything regarding...teleportation devices of any kind? or space travel, even? ]

[There's a couple paragraphs about space travel, talking about a mission to the moon a few decades ago -- with no further missions since then -- but nothing about teleportation devices]

[raventhaw]

[ sounds good. she'll just take one or two books from here, then. ]

[galrarm]

[ ... honestly those are probably close to the kind of books he used to read as a kid--

But anyway, he glances over to her, eyebrows raised. ]

Find anything interesting?

[raventhaw]

I was trying to get a feel for how technologically advanced this world is. It's far behind in comparison to Remnant.

[ she hands him the children's book as well as the one on space travel. ]

It doesn't seem like our captors took us via space travel, either. The farthest this world has gone is to the moon.

[galrarm]

[ He takes both, flipping the children's book open with a flick of his wrist. Immediately, his gaze softens a little, a tiny smile coming over his lips. Once he's done with that one, he looks at the one on space travel. ]

So it's pretty behind my version of earth. Interesting.

[raventhaw]

So it seems.

[ she closes her eyes for a moment, then looks back at shiro. ]

I don't think we're going to find any answers here. Except... [ she gestures to the office. ] there.
